Drawing Scanner: Turn Engineering Drawings into Clear, Straightened Digital Documents
Engineering drawings are often photographed with a phone rather than scanned with a traditional scanner. This can introduce perspective distortion, rotation, uneven lighting, shadows, and other issues that make the drawing harder to read or use.
ScanZeta's new Drawing Scanner is designed to help with exactly this situation.
The feature will be included in the next ScanZeta release.
What is Drawing Scanner?
Drawing Scanner is a dedicated tool for preparing photographs of engineering and technical drawings.
You can:
- Capture a drawing using your camera
- Select an existing drawing from your Gallery
- Correct perspective using four adjustable corners
- Straighten the drawing with fine rotation
- Use an alignment grid while making corrections
- Improve the appearance of the paper using Clean Paper
- Export the corrected drawing as JPG or PDF
- Send the resulting document to the Engineering PDF Editor for further work
The processing is performed locally on the device.
How to Use Drawing Scanner
1. Open Drawing Scanner
Open:
ScanZeta → Tools → Engineering Tools → Drawing Scanner
The dedicated Engineering Tools section keeps engineering-related tools together and allows additional tools to be added in future releases.
2. Capture or select your drawing
You can either:
Use Camera
Take a photograph of the engineering drawing directly.
or
Select from Gallery
Choose an existing photograph of the drawing.
This is useful when you have already photographed drawings or received images from another source.
3. Correct the perspective
If the photograph was taken from an angle, the drawing may appear distorted.
Drawing Scanner provides four corner handles that allow you to identify the actual corners of the drawing.
Adjust the four corners until they match the drawing boundaries.
This helps transform an angled photograph into a more scanner-like rectangular document.
4. Straighten the drawing
Move to the Straighten controls to correct small rotations.
Fine rotation can be adjusted in small increments, allowing you to straighten a drawing without having to retake the photograph.
An alignment grid is available to help judge horizontal and vertical alignment.
5. Enhance the paper
The Enhance section provides image cleanup options.
One of the available options is:
Clean Paper
When enabled, it can help make the paper background appear cleaner and more uniform.
You can adjust the available intensity control according to the drawing.
If you want to retain the original appearance, simply leave Clean Paper turned off.
6. Review your drawing
Before exporting, review the corrected image carefully.
Pay particular attention to:
- Dimension numbers
- Thin lines
- Hatching
- Drawing borders
- Grid references
- Title blocks
- Stamps and annotations
- Small engineering text
The purpose is to improve the photograph while retaining the important drawing information.
7. Save & Export
When you are satisfied, tap:
Save & Export
Drawing Scanner can produce:
- JPG
The exported files are saved locally on the device.
The original photograph is not modified.
8. Continue working in Engineering PDF Editor
After preparing the drawing, you can hand it off to ScanZeta's Engineering PDF Editor for additional engineering markup and document work.
This provides a simple workflow:
Photograph → Drawing Scanner → Corrected Drawing → Engineering PDF Editor
Why Drawing Scanner is Useful for Engineers
📐 Correct drawings photographed at an angle
A phone photograph rarely has perfect alignment. Perspective correction helps turn an angled photograph into a more usable document.
🔄 Fine rotation
Small rotations can make a surprisingly large difference when reading dimensions, notes, grids and title blocks.
Drawing Scanner provides fine rotation rather than requiring you to retake the photograph.
📷 Camera and Gallery support
You don't have to start with a newly captured photograph.
You can use an existing drawing image from your Gallery as well.
📄 JPG and PDF output
You can choose the format that fits your next step.
JPG can be useful for sharing an image, while PDF is convenient for document workflows.
🔍 Preserve detailed engineering information
Drawing Scanner is designed with engineering drawings in mind, including small numbers, thin lines, hatching, borders and other drawing details.
🧹 Cleaner paper appearance
Clean Paper can help reduce the visual effect of uneven paper/background illumination and make the drawing easier to view.
🔒 Local processing
Drawing Scanner is designed around ScanZeta's privacy-focused approach.
The drawing is processed on the device, without requiring you to upload the drawing to a cloud processing service.
This can be particularly useful when working with private engineering drawings and project documents.
A Practical Example
Imagine you receive a structural drawing and photograph it with your phone.
The photograph has:
- Slight perspective distortion
- A small rotation
- Uneven paper lighting
- A few shadows
Instead of taking the photograph again, you can:
1. Open Drawing Scanner
2. Select the photograph
3. Adjust the four corners
4. Fine-tune the rotation
5. Optionally enable Clean Paper
6. Review the drawing
7. Save & Export as JPG or PDF
8. Open it in Engineering PDF Editor if additional markup or measurement is required
This turns a simple phone photograph into a more useful digital drawing document.
Coming in the Next ScanZeta Release
Drawing Scanner will be included in the next ScanZeta release.
It is part of ScanZeta's growing Engineering Tools collection.
The Engineering Tools section currently includes:
- Engineering PDF Editor
- Drawing Scanner
More engineering-focused tools can be added to this section in future releases.
ScanZeta — Engineering Tools
ScanZeta is designed to provide practical document tools while keeping document processing local whenever possible.
